BUTTS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

The Impact of Heavy Rainfall on our Storm Drainage System

Jackson, Georgia — July 11, 2024 — With recent heavy rainfall events, Butts County has experienced widespread flooding and significant damage to our dirt roads. These downpours overwhelmed the capacity of our local drainage systems, causing water levels to rise rapidly. Our culvert pipes and ditches, which are designed to channel water away from roads and properties, quickly became clogged with branches, leaves, and sediment. This debris stopped proper water flow, worsening the flooding in many areas.

In addition to flooded areas, many dirt roads in the county sustained significant damage. The heavy rainfall softened the soil, making it prone to erosion and forming deep ruts and potholes. Some sections of dirt roads may have even been washed out entirely, making them impassable for vehicles.

Repair efforts are underway to address these issues. County crews are clearing debris from culvert pipes and ditches to restore proper drainage by using heavy machinery to remove blockages and ensure water can flow freely again. For the damaged dirt roads, repairs involve grading to fill in potholes and ruts, as well as adding new gravel or compacting the soil to improve stability and accessibility.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. Each situation requires individual evaluation to determine the best course of action needed.
