About Your District 2 Commissioner

Commissioner Robert L. Henderson, Sr., District 2, became the 65th Butts County Commissioner when he was elected in 2008. He took office for the 111th Session of the Board of Commissioners in 2009 and has completed three terms of office. He began his 4th term of office with the start of the 123rd Session in 2021.

Commissioner Henderson represents the southeast and southern portions of Butts County including Flovilla, Cork, Mt. Vernon and portions of Jackson. He is the owner of R.L. Henderson and Sons Tree Removal Service and also serves as the Pastor of Rock Creek Baptist Church in Indian Springs. He holds certifications through the University of Georgia as both a Basic and Advanced County Commissioner. He was elected Vice Chairman for 2013, 2014 and 2015 and Board Chairman for 2017. In 2024, he was tapped to serve as Vice Chairman again, bringing years of experience and leadership to the position.

During his tenure on the Board of Commissioners, he has worked passionately to improve services in his district, as well as throughout the County, benefitting the community as a whole. Some of his many accomplishments as part of the Board of Commissioners include:

  • Working toward establishing a separate home for our Senior Citizens in Butts County, which helped result in the opening of the Ida Ruth Taylor Senior Center at Daughtry Park.
  • Increasing the capability of public safety response apparatus for the Fire Department, including new ambulances, two new fire engines and our first fire ladder truck.
  • Helping to get a new Fire Station for the Worthville District to replace an aging and deficient station.
  • Leading the effort to bring better fire coverage to his district residents through the addition of the Butts County Fire Station number 8, which serves both Flovilla and Indian Springs and the areas surrounding those communities, which helped to significantly close the gap of fire coverage in the southeastern portion of the County. Today he is working closely with the District 3 commissioner and other board members to bring another new Fire Station that will close the remaining gaps in both districts, using SPLOST dollars to pay for these improvements.
  • Significantly enhancing two strategically important roads by bringing them from dirt roads to fully paved roads. Working with the many residents of Riley Road and Douglas Creek Road to obtain needed right of way and access, both roads were made significantly safer for the residents that live on these roads, as well as for school buses and others that use these roads frequently.
  • Growing the quality of the County workforce by advocating passionately for better employee benefits and wages that are competitive with other counties in our region. These efforts have significantly slowed the bleed of good, quality employees to other counties that used to pay more than Butts County did for the same work.
  • Improving quality of life services for our youth and older adults, as well as citizens of all ages through $4.4 million dollars of grant-funded enhancements to our Recreation Park and Senior Citizens Center at no cost to our citizens. These projects, which will replace the entire lighting system of the park and add a significant expansion to the Senior Center are underway in 2024 and will benefit everyone that uses them.

Commissioner Henderson encourages Citizen engagement with the County government, and reminds everyone that Butts County now holds a Citizen’s Academy every Spring and Autumn. This free, six-week program provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of how county government works by giving students the opportunity to learn about all of the key areas the County operates in (and just as importantly, the areas the County does not have jurisdiction over) and how it works to better serve the population of Butts County through service delivery.
