The Butts County Board of Commissioners has unanimously appointed Mr. Steve Layson to the position of Interim County Administrator, to be effective October 17, 2017. His experience includes 12 years with the Putnam County Board of Commissioners, where he served eight years as a District County Commissioner and four years as the at-large Chairman of the Board. Deciding to go into full time government administration, he accepted the position of County Administrator of Jones County and in 2005, he was selected to serve as Chief Administrative Officer (County Manager) for Bibb County, a position he held for nine years. Following the consolidation of Macon and Bibb County, Mr. Layson stayed on with the new consolidated government long enough to oversee the merger of multiple departments, systems, budgets and people into one unified government before retiring in 2015. Since then, he has been sharing his experience with counties in need of Interim Administrators, most recently in Pierce County.

During his time here, which is anticipated to be several months, Mr. Layson will assist the board with strategic priorities, evaluate the county government, manage the day-to-day running of the county and lead the search for a permanent County Administrator. Mr. Layson holds a Bachelor’s degree from Georgia College and a number of certifications in a wide variety of governmental specialities, including economic development, emergency management, leadership and more. A few of his successes in economic development include the Bass Pro Shop and Warehouse; Sara Lee Distribution Center and Kohl’s Distribution Center among others. In county management, he has successfully managed a $100 million plus budget and supervised over 850 employees, spread over 10 county departments.

Mr. Layson is actively involved with the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, which serves as Georgia’s County Association, and he was recommended highly by them to the Board of Commissioners to serve in the Interim County Administrator position. He will begin his tour of duty with Butts County on October 17th.
