The Butts County Clerk of Superior Court is an elected, county-wide Constitutional Officer charged to administer the proper registration and retention of official court documents. Included are civil and criminal proceedings, real estate and personal property transactions, and various other vital records. The Clerk of Superior Court also administers the jury system and supervises the Board of Equalization.

Morgan Vereline Ward holds the office of Clerk of Superior Court and assumed this office in 2019 after previously serving several years as a Deputy Clerk and Chief Deputy Clerk. The Clerk of Court is an elected position, chosen by the voters of Butts County every four years. She was most recently elected in 2020 to a full term of office and the next election cycle for the Clerk of Court begins in 2024. The Clerk’s Office is generally open Monday-Friday from 8AM to 5PM, although court schedules can sometimes affect this. The Butts County Probate Judge is an elected, county-wide Constitutional Officer charged to administrate the Probate Court, which provides service in the following areas:

  • Probation of wills and the administration of estates of deceased persons.
  • Appointment of guardians of the person and property of incapacitated adults.
  • Appointment of guardians of the person and property of minors.
  • Commitment for involuntary treatment of persons addicted to drugs or alcohol and/or suffering from mental illness.
  • Birth Certificates
  • Marriage Licenses
  • Death Certificates
  • Firearm Licenses
  • Traffic Court for County

Elizabeth Hearn Biles holds the office of Probate Judge and assumed this office in 2013 after previously serving as a Deputy Clerk of Superior Court. The Probate Judge is an elected position, chosen by the voters of Butts County every four years. The next election cycle for the Probate Judge begins in 2024 and the position is nonpartisan. The Probate Court is generally open Monday-Friday from 8AM to 4:30PM, although court schedules can sometimes affect this. The Butts County Chief Magistrate Judge is an elected, county-wide official charged to administrate the Magistrate Court, which provides service in the following areas:

  •  Arrest Warrant Applications for Domestic and Non-domestic Cases
  •  Bad Check Warrants
  •  Evictions
  •  Non-domestic Civil Suits up to $15,000
  •  Wage Garnishments

Rebecca Johnston Pitts holds the office of Chief Magistrate Judge and assumed this office in 2013 after previously serving eight years as Associate Magistrate Judge. The Chief Magistrate is an elected position, chosen by the voters of Butts County every four years. The next election cycle for the Chief Magistrate begins in 2020. The Magistrate Court is generally open Monday-Friday from 8AM to 5PM, although court schedules can sometimes affect this.
