Public Works Mechanic

The Butts County Public Works department is seeking a full-time Mechanic. This position is responsible for mechanical repair and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform maintenance and services; i.e. oil changes, tires, etc.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and parts.
  • Repairs and maintains small equipment including lawnmowers and weed eaters.
  • Maintains records of time and costs of work performed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required By This Position:

  • Knowledge of maintenance methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including maintenance equipment, test and diagnostic equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
  • This position requires:  stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education, or a combination of education, experience and skills that meet the prerequisites of the position.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
