Equipment Operator III

The Butts County Public Works Department is seeking applicants for an Equipment Operator III.

This position is an Advanced Level position responsible for operating a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment to assist in County Road and infrastructure maintenance activities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Operate graders, excavators, large backhoes, and other heavy equipment for grading, drainage construction, and road building
  • Plan and execute digging and loading strategies for difficult terrain or confined spaces
  • Provide guidance or informal training to Equipment Operators I and II
  • Perform advanced preventive maintenance checks and troubleshoot minor mechanical issues
  • Lead or assist in storm and disaster response operations requiring specialized equipment
  • Report equipment needs, hazards, or work progress to supervisors
  • Operate light-duty trucks, tractors with simple attachments, or small mowers to transport materials and perform routine maintenance tasks
  • Operate roll-off trucks, knuckle-boom trucks, bobcats, or backhoe-mounted loaders to haul, load, or move materials
  • Perform basic trenching, grading, or digging while avoiding utilities and minimizing property damage
  • Mow rights-of-way and ditches using tractors with articulated boom systems
  • Collect debris or limbs and transport loads to disposal sites
  • Monitor work area safety and assist with directing or flagging traffic
  • Respond to emergency events and special assignments
  • Operate light-duty trucks, tractors with simple attachments, or small mowers to transport materials and perform routine maintenance tasks
  • Assist with setting up work zones, flagging, and traffic control
  • Load and unload materials; dig, rake, shovel, or compact surfaces manually
  • Perform daily inspections, light maintenance, and cleaning of assigned equipment
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear proper protective equipment
  • Support storm cleanup and emergency response operations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED preferred
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible equipment operation experience, including heavy equipment
  • Valid Georgia CDL with endorsements appropriate for assigned equipment
  • Flagging certification
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent, or a combination of education, experience and skills that meet the prerequisites of the position
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License preferred)
