BUTTS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

Understanding Your 2024 Notice of Assessments

Jackson, Georgia — April 29, 2024 — Notice of Assessments have been mailed out and should be reaching mailboxes. An Annual Notice of Assessment is not a tax bill. Rather, the notice informs you of the current fair market value assessed on your residential or commercial real estate as of January 1, 2024. If you have questions about your Notice of Assessment, have not yet received your notice by the middle of May, or would like to fill out the application to appeal your value, please stop by the Tax Assessor’s Office or contact them at 770-775-8207.

The appraisers employed by the Board of Assessors appraise property values in accordance with formulas and legal statutes imposed by the State of Georgia, the Department of Revenue, and the General Assembly, and they are legally required to follow these formulas. If you disagree with the assessed value, you have the right to appeal. Appeal applications must be submitted within 45 days of the date located in the upper right-hand corner of your assessment notice.

The millage rate for the County government has dropped from 17.413 mils in 2011 to the current rate of 10.959 mils. Last year, this was the lowest the millage rate has been since 1993 and was the lowest of all six of the surrounding counties.

The county budget is being developed now and will be adopted in June 2024. At that point, the Board of Commissioners will determine a millage rate. Right now, Butts County’s millage rate is 10.959 mils of tax, or about $10.96 for every thousand dollars of taxable value. The Commission has either lowered or held the millage rate flat consistently for several years now and always tries to balance this fairly.
