The Board of Commissioners Office has been notified by the Municipal-County Board of Elections and Registration that Tina O. Lunsford has been selected as the new County Elections Director, and will begin her new position on Monday, January 6th. Lunsford comes to Butts County from Henry County, where she has worked for the past 20 years. She began there in 2000 as a Benefits Administrator and transferred to Elections in 2006; in 2015 she was tapped to be the Director and has held that position since then.
She will replace Avery Smith, who holds the distinction of having been the only full-time County Elections Director since the position was created in 2009, and who retired from the County on December 31st, 2019. Prior to that, Smith served for five years in a part-time capacity as Chair of the Board of Elections and Registration, dating from when that board was first created in April of 2004. The creation of that board relieved the Probate Court from the responsibility of managing elections, and Smith was chosen for a board position due to having already had many years of experience working elections when they occurred.
A retirement reception for Avery Smith will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 from 3PM until 5PM in the Elections Office of the Butts County Administration Building. The public is invited to attend.
