Butts County Commissioner’s Office is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Community Services. Under limited supervision, incumbent performs highly responsible work in the administration of the Community Services Department. The department provides a range of public services to the citizens of Butts County and includes planning and zoning services; animal control services; building inspections; county code enforcement and facilities management oversight. The Community Services Director must have a working knowledge of all functions that relate to the operation of this department. The incumbent is directly involved in the current and long-range planning programs of the County as they relate to the development and implementation of land use and related zoning plans and policies; ensuring that county facilities are maintained appropriately and that provided services of all divisions are handled in an efficient, cost-effective manner. The incumbent oversees all operations of the department, providing administrative oversight to all subordinating functions the zoning administrator, planners, building inspectors, building maintenance personnel, code enforcement officers, animal control officers and other assigned support staff. Incumbent regularly participates in and provides input and guidance to the Zoning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and County Commissioners as required and regularly interfaces with various County officials in the process of overseeing the operation of the department. Incumbent assimilates technical information required for the job and applies this knowledge to the assigned functions of the position. Incumbent is also a source of information to all county departments, elected officials, commissioners and the general public. The Community Services Director coordinates activities through the office of the County Administrator and receives supervision and direction from the same or his/her designee.

Required Qualifications
A typical path toward obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined in this job description is graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in public administration, city or regional planning, law, or closely related field; at least eight years of progressively responsible  experience in municipal, county or regional planning and development; or in city/county management, at least three of which were at a managerial level; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. In addition, the following requirements must be met:

  • Possession of a valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • Consent to a criminal and driver’s history
  • Must be able to prove American Citizenship

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge and ability to use MS Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel and Google Docs
  • Understanding of ordinances, laws and powers of local government
  • Knowledge of building code and inspections is helpful
