A pole barn is a barn that is essentially a roof extended over a series of poles. They are generally rectangular and do not necessarily require exterior walls. The roof is supported by the poles, which make up the perimeter of the barn. Walls may be added to pole barns but are not required for structural integrity. The roof can be gabled or hopped. Pole barns are often used for hay storage or livestock shelter, and larger structures are also used for indoor horse stables.
Non Portable Pole Barns – Storage Sheds
A non portable pole barn is described as a structure, typically 10’X 12’ and larger that possesses post holes or footings for the intended purpose of securing the structure to the ground. A Building Permit is required for this type of Pole Barn and the following documents require submission to the Community Development Department and payment of the associated fee, which is calculated as it relates to the actual cost of construction of the unit. Please consult the fee schedule located in the Community Development office.

Portable Pole Barns – Storage Sheds
A portable pole barn is described as a structure, that is designed for the intended purpose of not securing the structure to the ground. A Building Permit is not required for this type of Pole Barn; however, the applicant must comply with the existing zoning district “Set Back” regulations.
