A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF BUTTS COUNTY HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MICHAEL ALLEN “MAC” COLLINS; TO AUTHORIZE THE CHAIRMAN TO SIGN; TO AUTHORIZE THE COUNTY CLERK TO ATTEST THE RESOLUTION; TO COMMUNICATE THE RESOLUTION TO THE GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY; AND FOR OTHER LEGAL AND LAWFUL PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, Michael Allen “Mac” Collins, a native of Butts County, who was educated in the local school system and later became a businessman and trucking company owner, desired to serve his community through elected office, and;
WHEREAS, Mac Collins entered the political arena to run as Chairman of the Butts County Board of Commissioners, serving from 1977 through 1980, and;
WHEREAS, Mac Collins in later years chose to run for a seat in the Georgia Senate, successfully winning election to that office and subsequently serving two terms as a Georgia State Senator and building a political track record as a strong conservative political leader, and:
WHEREAS, Mac Collins chose to run in 1992 for the United States House of Representatives, 3rd District and successfully unseated the incumbent, taking office in 1993 as a member of the 102nd Congress and serving a total of six terms as a Member of the House and representing both Georgia and Butts County, as well as many of the surrounding counties, with honor, distinction and commonsense capability, and;
WHEREAS, Mac Collins felt that investing himself into his home community, building a successful trucking and transportation business, raising his family here and contributing enormously of his time, talents and energy towards the betterment of his county, state and nation was a noble calling and did strive to do all these things for many decades, becoming the most notable political figure that Butts County has ever produced, and always taking a considerable interest in his community until his death on November 20, 2018 at the age of 74, and;
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the governing authority and county from which his political career was launched pay homage and tribute to his memory, his legacy of service and his many accomplishments, now therefore be it:
RESOLVED, that the Butts County Commission hereby honors the life and legacy of Mac Collins and by means of this resolution, petitions the Georgia General Assembly and the State of Georgia to name the portion of Georgia Highway 16 from the western terminus of Third Street in Jackson to the Butts & Spalding County line, as the “Congressman Mac Collins Memorial Highway” and hereby authorizes the Chairman to sign this Resolution and the Clerk to certify it and spread it upon the minutes of Butts County for posterity, and to transmit the Resolution to the Butts County Legislative Delegation.
