A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF BUTTS COUNTY HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MARGARET MCCORMICK; TO AUTHORIZE THE CHAIRMAN TO SIGN; TO AUTHORIZE THE COUNTY CLERK TO ATTEST THE RESOLUTION; AND FOR OTHER LEGAL AND LAWFUL PURPOSES.

WHEREAS, Margaret Wilson McCormick, a native of Mitchell County, came to the local school system in 1956 to continue her career as an educator, after having already taught school for a number of years in Carrolton, Rome and other systems, becoming an 8th grade teacher at Henderson High School and Elementary School, teaching language arts, serving as a girls basketball coach, choral group director, coordinator of the school testing program, and being named Teacher of the Year in 1960, and;

WHEREAS, following the consolidation of Butts County schools in 1970 and the creation of Jackson Primary School, Mrs. McCormick’s achievements as an educator were recognized when she was elevated to become Principal of School, a position she would not only hold, but excel in, until her retirement on June 1, 1984 after 40 years in the field of education, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. McCormick was an active member of the Butts County community, including service in the PTO; being a founding member and later, President of the Jackson Theatre Guild, an organization founded to promote the appreciation of the performing arts; being the first woman appointed to the Butts County Hospital Authority; and numerous other community endeavors that laid foundations for the enhancement of the artistic, educational and cultural aspects of Butts County, and;

WHEREAS, Mrs. McCormick, who passed away on November 16, 2018 at the age of 95 years is remembered with much love, admiration and respect, not just for her accomplishments as an educator, but for being an inspiration to generations of young people, a pillar of wisdom and knowledge, a friend to many people, and a special lady whose years spent in Butts County made it and us a better community for her being here, now therefore be it:

RESOLVED, that the Butts County Commission hereby honors the life and legacy of Margaret Wilson McCormick by means of this resolution, and declares that the month of February 2019 shall be declared β€œMargaret McCormick Month” in Butts County to honor the significant legacy and life of this beloved educator, community leader and advocate of the arts, and hereby authorizes the Chairman to sign this Resolution and the Clerk to certify it and spread it upon the minutes of Butts County for posterity, it is so
