Senior Citizens Center Grand Opening Today

Butts County will hold a Grand Opening ceremony today with an open house to follow, beginning at noon in its new location on Ernest Biles Drive. The new center, formerly the home of the Jackson-Butts County Child Development Center, will now house all senior citizen programs in a much larger and improved space but will still be a part of the Recreation Department campus. The program had previously been housed in the Ernest Biles Youth Center located adjacent to the new location. Over the years, growth in both recreation and senior programs had created a severe shortage of space in the Youth Center. Programs for the Senior Citizens had been largely confined to one common room and a couple of small offices since the Youth Center opened in the mid 1990′s.

In late June, the Board of Directors of the Child Development Center notified the County Administrator that they had made the decision not to reopen the center in the Fall of 2012 due to declining enrollment and cuts made to their programs by the State. The building occupied by the Child Development Center was constructed in the 1990′s with funds obtained from grants but has always been owned and maintained by the County. “While we were sad to lose the Child Development Center and what they brought to the community, this did solve a twofold problem we have been faced with for some time” said County Administrator Michael Brewer. “Our senior citizens were completely out of room in the Youth Center and our Recreation Department staff was using office space for storage more often than not. This opportunity will provide the senior citizens with a lot more space and hopefully will attract new participants to the programs they will now be able to offer. It will also help Leisure Services Director Jim Herbert and his staff to make better use of the Youth Center with the additional space this will free up there” he added.

The repurposed facility, located to the left of the tennis courts, has additional space for classrooms where educational programs of value to seniors can be held, as well as a computer room where seniors can check email and become familiar with computers and how they work. The former playground will be incorporated into the recreation park as an additional playground for smaller children.

Work to convert the center to its new purpose was handled primary by the Butts County Building Department with assistance from the Recreation Department Maintenance Division and inmates from the State of Georgia Department of Corrections.

Butts County invites the public to attend the grand opening and to tour the facility. A ceremony of dedication will be held during the open house, with refreshments and tours provided by the Leisure Services Department. These will continue on until 2:00 PM.

Early Voting Has Ended

Early voting in Butts County ended this past Friday, November 2nd at 5:00 PM. The early voting period, which began on October 15th and included one day of Saturday voting, saw 6,426 Butts County voters turn out early to vote in person at the Butts County Administration Building. In addition, 276 voters sent in absentee ballots before the deadline, bringing the total of person who have already voted to 6,702. According to Elections Director Avery Smith, this has been the largest early voter turnout Butts County has ever seen, with this past Friday being the last and the busiest early voting day of the season with 576 voters at Administration Building. No voting will take place on Monday the 5th.

WIth around 13,500 registered voters in Butts County, this indicates that approximately 49.64% of the registered voters have already cast their ballot ahead of Tuesday’s race. Of the remaining 50.36% of voters, those wishing to vote in the election will now be required to vote in person at their precinct between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 6th. If you are not sure where you are registered to vote, you can find this out by going to the Georgia Secretary of State’s “My Voter Page” at https://mvp.sos.state.ga.us/ and enter the requested information to obtain your precinct information. You can also call the Election’s Office at 770-775-8202 and speak with an election’s worker.

Much of the reason for this year’s high voter turnout is credited to a hotly contested Sheriff’s race, a State Senate race that includes a local candidate for the first time in many years and the Presidential race. All other local races, as well as the Congressional race, has already been decided, either in the primaries or in some cases by the candidates having no opposition.

Worthville Fire Station Ceremonies Planned for May 22nd

Butts County Officials will officially open and dedicate the new Worthville Fire Station-Butts County Station 3, tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM (Tuesday, May 22). This new state-of-the-art fire station replaces the old station that was torn down last year due to age and structural deficiencies. Primary funding for the construction was obtained through a grant by the US Department of Homeland Security. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM and once concluded, the station will be open for tours by Fire Department personnel. The Fire Department will begin the process of moving into the new station and equipping it later this week.

The new station features a large bay area, sleeping quarters, a day room and kitchen, utility room and a small meeting room that can host training sessions or meetings. A large upstairs area is available for storage or other uses. Additionally, a piece of Worthville Fire Department history will soon make its way back to the station. Citizens familiar with the old station will remember the large granite dedication monument that used to be displayed proudly in front of the old fire station. This monument was removed when construction began to protect it from possible damage. It has been in secure storage since and will be put back on the grounds once the landscaping is completed and a suitable site is prepared for it.

The Butts County Board of Commissioners cordially invites the public to attend the ceremonies at 10:00 AM on May 22nd and to tour the new facility afterwards. The new station is located on Keys Ferry Road at the intersection with Walthall Road just west of Highway 36. Its strategic location ensures accessibility to multiple areas such as Fincherville and Jackson Lake as well as Henry and Newton County.
